Start with the exact Prius Prime trim. Fuel used × gas-mode MPG gives estimated engine miles, and the MPG assumption can differ between trims in the same model year.
Match the model year and trim
The 2024 Toyota Prius Prime brochure (PDF, specifications) lists these US EPA-estimated hybrid-mode ratings:
| Trim | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE | 53 | 51 | 52 |
| XSE | 50 | 47 | 48 |
| XSE Premium | 50 | 47 | 48 |
These are model-year examples in miles per US gallon. Check your own vehicle in FuelEconomy.gov’s comparison tool, especially if you have an earlier generation or a different year. Select Prius Prime rather than the regular Prius.
For model year 2025, Toyota changed the name to Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Use the same method with the rating for your own vehicle.
Why the trim matters in an estimate
Suppose 6 US gallons represent the fuel used during a consistent full-to-full period:
| Gas-mode input | Calculation | Engine-mile estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 52 MPG | 6 × 52 | ≈ 312 miles |
| 48 MPG | 6 × 48 | ≈ 288 miles |
The difference comes from the fuel-economy assumption, not from measuring two engines. Picking the correct vehicle specification gives you a more appropriate starting point. Conditions such as weather, speed, and route still affect real fuel consumption.
Build a log around your own driving
If you mostly charge at home, a single tank may span many trips. Keep a record at each fuel stop: date, odometer, gallons or liters, and whether the tank was filled. A full-tank baseline helps you compare fuel use with total driving over the same period.
In EngineMiles, choose your vehicle and gas-mode fuel economy, then set a starting point. A known engine-mile total can carry forward; starting today gives you a new history. The first full tank establishes the fuel boundary, and later fill-ups add to the estimate.
You don’t need to manually label every trip EV or HV. The estimate comes from fuel you log. EngineMiles Pro can show an estimated PHEV electric split over the tracked history, while the free plan includes one vehicle and unlimited manual fill-ups.
Common Prius Prime questions
Is MPGe the number to enter?
No. MPGe expresses energy-equivalent efficiency. Use the gasoline / hybrid-mode MPG figure for this calculation. The MPG guide explains how to tell them apart.
Can I subtract the estimate from the whole odometer?
A log started partway through ownership covers only the tracked period. Compare its engine miles with distance from that same starting point, rather than your car’s lifetime odometer.
What if I rarely buy gasoline?
Keep recording the fuel stops you do make. A fuel-based estimate updates from those entries; it cannot detect gasoline burned between them in real time. Keep following the manufacturer’s time-based maintenance schedule as well.
